Skirting Issues..

Having confessed to mucho love and nostalgia for ElleGirl at least once- no, twice- before on this blog, I was taken with yet another fit of it yesterday...and therein lay the way to a trip to the ElleGirl Korea site (I know I've said this before, but- what is it with fashion magazines from that part of the world? They don't ever seem to be anything short of amazing), where I had lots of fun browsing through clothes that are
a) inaccessible thanks to not being sold where I am
b) meant to be worn by a much thinner, cuter person than me (I really don't see my legs holding up to knee socks anytime soon)..
It was actually this picture (seriously, doesn't she look like she should be Facehuntered? The white- possibly canvas?- shoes alone have me in love, but it's all so cute that I'm even willing to throw out my cynicism over this being a professionally styled affair) that got me thinking about the fabled theory re: skirt lengths and the state of the economy (the one that says high hemlines=boomtime, long skirts=recession. But what do you use as a sartorial windvane in a country where a knee-length skirt is considered 'mini'?). I reckon it's all to be taken with a large pinch of salt, since I've never really seen long skirts as frumpy or depression-inducing in any way- if anything, they're easier to move in since you don't have to worry as much about how you sit or move, and mid-length skirts (I've felt this for a while now) are actually more fun, since you don't have to worry about the state of your legs as much, and they put you at less risk of stepping on their hemlines and tearing them. Most of all, there's actually something positively grand about having all that fabric swishing around my legs- I love the way some skirts just go all swirly when the people wearing them move..
picture from ellegirl.co.kr (I can't read any of it, but I think it's some kind of online catalogue attached to the site. And the pictures are too cute). And I know I've ODed on parentheses- I apologise for that..

I love this - she looks so clean and carefree! Longer lengths and all that swooshing fabric always make me feel a little claustrophobic though - must find a way to overcome this...

and bouquets of parentheses are never a bad thing :)

ta for the tag too, I will hop to it!

Love those images.... that length of skirt is a hard one but I think it's about letting go of whether it makes your body look the best....and just embracing the cuteness of the look!

A long skirt length normally doesn't wash with me, but I love this look and if I thought I could pull it off, I'd run out a buy a long skirt pronto. Great find and I'm also devouring the pictures on the Ellegirl sites, so merci beaucoup!

Wendy: I know, they're adorable- helped along considerably by the models..
ENC: Freedom from worrying..yeah, what's not to like?
Deep_in_vogue: yeah, it does look that way..
The_Fashion_Assistant: I think it's the leggings that do that...but it's a good way to describe the look that I hadn't even thought of (which is why you work in fashion and I do not:)
Headmistress: I'd love to try miniskirts, but even if the old legs were up to it, I'm not up to the staring...and as for long skirts, it depends on the skirt really. I've seen hideous ones too..
Susie: I reckon it's a tricky length, but then I've chucked always dressing to look thinner/'better', so it doesn't rouble me as much. But I think a slightly longer skirt (like a bit below the knee) won't be as hard to pull off.
Meg: I can't believe I didn't post about the ElleGirl pics sooner, ..they're astonishingly nice for a catalogue. And the longer skirt length doesn't have to be that tricky midcalf job, I find a little shorter than that works fine for me (and I'm far from slender).
Kirsty: Glad you like the pics, they're fantastic models methinks. And thanks for the link!
Elisabeth: I know, it half makes me wish I were Korean too :)

i think my biggest fear about wearing full length skirts is when i have to go to the restroom - especially the public ones with wet floors! i don't think i need to elaborate further but i shudder at the thought of it.

Evie: It doesn't really have to be full-length..my longer skirts go anywhere from a few inches below the knee to ankle-length. But the bathroom floors do sound horrible!
Yumiko: At least you get ElleGirl, in some form :). I wish I lived in a place where wearing short skirts was feasible- sadly, all my cutest ones can only be worn indoors if I don't want to be leched at.
