Ack!

Re: the news that Keira Knightley might be about to play Eliza Doolittle in a remake of My Fair Lady, my thoughts ran more or less as follows:
a) A remake? Of My Fair Lady? Sabrina was bad enough...and remakes of anything are nearly always crap. No, actually they're always crap.
b) Oh God, Keira Knightley as Eliza? She might be an authentic Londoner, but what about her pouting....and the singing...and the acting..
c) If they really have to do this, is Keira Knightley the only young actress in the UK aka the only name Hollywood can come up with to fill the role of a Cockney? I know Audrey Hepburn was also cast for commercial reasons, but she's Audrey Hepburn.
d) Whatever. I'm just going to watch Shimotsuma Monogatari again (the Japanese title sounds much cooler than Kamikaze Girls- this one's joining Amélie on my list of movies that will never fail to make me grin from ear to ear. It really is brilliant).
e) *BFH spends next couple of hours laughing her head off at aforementioned film*. I'll take Rococo Lolita+Biker Chick over a rehash that will probably be as bad as all the other rehashes before it, any day.

Does anyone even want a remake of My Fair Lady? With Keira Knightley? This is hugely unimaginative, especially in the wake of the very cool-sounding film you just described.

Wow, a remake. Well, I wasn't in a fizz to get one. I would have been quite happy to let the AH MFL just live on as The One.

I'm now wondering who they'll cast opposite her?

It'll be pretty hilarious to see KK trying to wrangle the Cockney accent.

Keira is great as person, and fashionable, but she wouldnt pull it off

Ugh, even my husband was offended by the idea of Kiera Knightley in My Fair Lady!

Some idiot is also remaking Rosemary's Baby. Ridiculous.

How about the most recent update of Jane Eyre with Ellen Page (Juno)?

Please god no, i can't stand Keira!

Is it her job to wreck major works of literature or something??!

I think Keira is the best option (other than an unknown) if they MUST do a remake. But really, they shouldn't be remaking this at all. What needs updating? What needs improvement? NOTHING!!!

a) a silly decision to do a remake...and b) there are SO many other more worthy British actresses that could do the part well...

Mon Dieu! This is the first I've heard about this but it does not make me happy. How could they remake something that Audrey Hepburn perfected? Especially with someone like Keira Knightely in the role?! Do they actually believe they could improve the film in some way?

I have never heard of Kamikaze Girls but it does sound brilliant and I'll have to watch it now.

Fashionaddict: I very definitely don't want it! And I think remakes, as a genre, tend to suck.

ENC: There were reports saying Daniel Day-Lewis was in it. I suspect that, at the end of the day, Audrey's version will still rule supreme- who remembers the Harrison Ford-Julia Ormond version of Sabrina now?

Chililady: She sounds nice enough in interviews, I guess, but I don't think she can pull this off either.

Yumiko: It's good to see you back here :) I'll give Solaris a try soon.

Elisabeth: I second that.

Sister Wolf: I'm not even going to ask what the Rosemary's Baby remake is going to be like...

Miss Cavendish: Since you say it's an update (would that be in the spirit of Emma-turned-Clueless?), I'm wondering what that would be like. Though I don't really see Ellen Page as very Jane Eyre-ish, it could work if they weren't just rehashing an older movie.

Riz: She was great in Bend It Like Beckham (which was pre-Pirates, and pre-pout) but I had to go and watch the entire P&P BBC miniseries to get the image (and sound!) of her as Lizzy Bennet out of my head. I so agree with your second comment (though Atonement wasn't too bad).

The Clothes Horse: I'd rather have an unknown than her in the role, really. And I agree with you- Audrey's Eliza doesn't need improvement, but apparently the new version is going to focus more on Eliza's emotional background, or some such faff.

Susie: I'm with you on both a) and b)..especially b), since I'm sick of seeing her in every big-budget movie with a part for a female Brit in it (except the Harry Potter ones). It's as if Hollywood thinks there's only one actress in the whole of Britain or something.

Grace: Apparently they do believe that they can 'improve' it. And on a happier note, yes you must see
Kamikaze Girls! You'll feel very happy by the end of it..

Agreed. This sounds horrifying.

I was a little repulsed that Keira Knightly would play the role as well. =/

No. That's it....and also, why?!

well the first movie is terrible, the logic of choosing KK the same as choosing Audrey for the part. Nothing surprising, it's all about the money.
Hope the new movie will be truer to the original idea, and leave the sugary stuff aside.
