Comme Again..

So, pictures of the Comme des Garçons for H&M line are out (they have been for a while, plus there's an interview with Rei Kawakubo in this month's issue of W), and I must say, it doesn't look bad at all- and it most definitely does look more Comme-ish than anything in the LV collaboration. The pictures below probably make the clothes look less than spectacular, and there is the odd item that does look more H&M than Comme (e.g. button-down shirts and a trenchcoat, (though the polka-dot shirts remind me ever so slightly of Comme's AW08 collection), it still has a fairly recognisable influence of Rei Kawakubo about it. And truth be told, a lot of potentially-interesting details don't seem to be too clear in the pics below- is that a hint of deconstruction I see on what looks like a skirt in Picture #3 below?- though methinks the drop-crotch shorts and side-fastened jacket in the pic above and white shirts with sleeve detailing in Picture #2 below, the zippered jacket in Picture #3, and the tailed tuxedo-style jacket in Picture #4, and last but not least, the frilly Goth Loli-style dress in Picture #1, just below, would make for intriguing additions to most wardrobes (though the last is a matter of my personal taste, and everyone might not agree).
It's a pity there's no H&M in this country- I'd have loved to see the clothes up close, and the line is set to be carried only in a few stores (reportedly at a higher price point than previous tie-up collections, and, unlike what was reported in April, it doesn't feature children's clothing since the designer shot that idea down)- but as a collaboration between one of the most left-of-centre designers I've ever known of and a brand like H&M, it certainly is an achievement.

thanks for posting these photos. i agree that it is cdg more than the lv collaboration, but there is still something missing for me. in general, i find all designer/discount retail chain collaborations to be disappointing. and, trust me, you aren't missing anything by not having an h&m. the quality is generally poor, even for the price. and there would be no chance of getting your hands on any of the cdg pieces even if you wanted to. at least not in the stores.

would love to examine the items up close, but it's a shame we don't have the store in Singapore...

I'm sure it will come here at some point. You would certainly think there must be a market in India. The chain is incredibly popular in the UK and most reasonable sized towns seem to have an H&M. They are also liberally scattered through London - one at Oxford Circus, another close to Harrods. I know, my wife dragged me into one whenever we happenned to pass by.

Dianna: H&M is still better than the stuff I get to buy here, to be honest (a lot of my wardrobe favourites are H&M pieces). And maybe you're right about the collection, it's more H&M with an influence of Comme than Comme, per se- but then that's what it was meant to be. I'll still look forward to real-life reviews, though- I could be totally wrong about this.

Susie: I'm still wondering how they'll look, though..

Stephie: I feel you on this- I'd love to take a look at the clothes myself!

The Clothes Horse: I hope you'll be able to, and maybe tell us about it?
Elisabeth: That's probably a lot of people's take on this collection!

Juliet: I hope it'll be good :)

Chailey: There most definitely is a market, it just depends on whether they get the pricing right- there are pathetically few options in the shops today for girls who want nice clothes that aren't kurtas and don't feature lycra (I fully understand your wife's need to go into the shops), and don't want to shell out a bomb for things. I heard Topshop was coming to Delhi, possibly this year or next- hope the other retailers follow suit, without watering down their designs too much.

beauty_confessional: I'll check out your blog as soon as I get some downtime, it sounds interesting.

Yumiko: The dress is interesting, at first I thought it was a frock coat but it looks cool either way..

The dress in picture #1 looks great! And it's true, most of the chain-store/designer collaborations don't quite meet expectations. Although Roberto Cavalli did a collection for H&M last year I think... it was definitely better than most. Well of course, his designs are fabulous:) Love the name of your blog by the way! Nonsense is always the best kind of conversation lol.
