Somewhat Wide Of The Mark

Is about the only way I can describe the Comme des Garcons collaboration with Louis Vuitton. I hate to open this month's posting with a grumble, but these bags are beyond me- and by that, I don't mean beyond my budget, I mean beyond my understanding. According to nitro:licious and everywhere else, the collection was supposed to be inspired by Rei Kawakubo's memories of 1978, when Louis Vuitton first got to Japan, and the general giddy feeling of having a great store nearby (at least that's the way I interpret it- the last bit, I mean).
To be absolutely truthful, the problem with the Comme-LV collaboration is that there's simply too much LV to it, and not nearly enough Comme (case in point: Bag 1, below. The handles are Comme-ish, but nothing about the rest of the bag is. They're cool handles, handles I wouldn't mind seeing on a bag that is fit to have them, but handles alone do not a good bag make). The bags aren't all heinous as far as shape goes, and I'm sure they'll be very well made, but I can't help thinking it could have been so much cooler without the logo OD (and I admit to being biased against logos, but this really is a bit too much IMO). All in all, to put it bluntly, it's hideous. And not even hideous in a Comme way (which is really the letdown, and more of a letdown because Rei Kawakubo- as I never tire of saying- is one of my fashion heroes). But I'm still optimistic about the H&M collaboration...

PS: all comments on the last two posts will be answered tomorrow. I'm sorry to be slack about this, but I am tired..

Agreed; they don't look at all Comme to me. I'd have thought they were MJ's work on a day when he wasn't feeling that inspired. However, I do like the large handles, they're quirky.

Definitely doesn't do it for me. I used to be entranced by LV's limited edition/collaboration stuff, but I've moved onto Prada. LV just isn't inspiring me lately.

totally agree! so boring & way too lv. i despise lv because of the logo od. no coolness factor in my book. i expected much, much more from cdg.

Love your blog! And you're right more CDG, less LV please!!

Yes! So underwhelming, but I have to admit that I thought this was a dubious collabo. anyway because LV and CdG seem to have such different design aesthetics (which could arguably be a reason why they might work well together) but yes hopefully the H&M one will work well.

These are just plain odd....nothing to do with LV or CdG....the balance is just very very wrong... I really thought that they BOTH could have taken it further... case in point... Richard Prince print LV bags work quite well...

All I see is LVLVLV, which makes me want to puke a bit.

my first question after seeing the bags; Did Comme even had a word on these? It doesn't seem like it.

Agreed. I just don't think I'm ever going to get the allure of LV... the handles on the first are great but only on any other bag!

ENC: Yes, it looks like bad LV to me too..
Wendy: I've never been much of an LV fan, but they did have their moments, like you said. This, however, isn't one of them.
Dianna: Yes! I hate logo OD too...
Lindarrr: Thank you! And it's great to see you here, I've admired your pics on Chictopia often enough :)
Meg: I had my doubts about this particular collab too, but I do agree with you- it could have been better and wasn't.
Susie: I'm not that taken with LV's artistic collabs, though the Prince one worked- but IMO it's not just the balance, the two aesthetics clash in these bags, and not in a good way.
The Hundred Dresses: I don't know if I'm calling it, really, but honestly I'm sad at the looks of it :(
Teresa: Aaagh yes, the LVLVLV ruins even what could have been the batter-looking bags.
Evie: The H&M collection does look better!
Juliet: I suppose they did have some input...it just didn't work too well though.
Daddy: are you considering getting one? Do get it- I think guys should have nice ties in their wardrobes if they like dressing up (and you do).
thefashionhead: I think the problem is that it's not a particularly interesting kind of weird...too LV for me.
lacouturier: I will do that at the first opportunity! (little pressed for time right now)
Elisabeth: I wonder if anyone would swoon over these?
Newyorkchique: Hehe, the logo hate really can't be helped :)
Katie Rosemary: You're not alone on that one, and yes, the handles could have been fab on another bag!
V: I think it's the pictures...and I can't see your profile (ergo, I can't see your blog either!)

You said it girl!
So after my own heart.
I cant stand the whole logo sub culture, and don't really get LV at all (would love if someone would explain it to me)
I did like the handles on the first bag but the moment my nearly happy eyes hit the Lv part... disappointment sunk in again.
